The final event of CBE Week was a fitting end to the series, with great crowd enthusiasm. The event began with Kirk Mayes from the Skillman Foundation's Good Neighborhoods program gave the audience some context as to how the speakers were relevant to the needs of local residents. They were followed by our featured speaker Mikel Lezamiz, who described experiences of Mondragon in building their local economy up from scratch. Finally, Charity Hicks of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network (DBCFSN) described the Network's wide range of food security endeavors, including their community organic farm in the River Rouge Park; their work with the City Council in promoting urban agriculture and food security; the Ujamaa Co-operative Food Buying Club; and their educational efforts to encourage young people to pursue careers in agriculture, aquaculture, animal husbandry, bee-keeping, and other food related fields. The event ended with a spirited Q&A session.
