U of M Detroit Center
3663 Woodward Ave., Detroit
8:30 AM - 2:30 PM
This event was the "Signature Event" of CBE Week, featuring Mikel Lezamiz from Spain's Modragon Cooperative Corporation. He described how over 50 years Mondragon's Basque community developed a network of 120 cooperative businesses in manufacturing (including auto supply), service, banking, insurance, and retail. He was joined by Professor John Logue from Kent State University's Ohio Employee Ownership Center, who spoke about how the Ohio Employee Owned Network has used ideas from Mondragon to helped save and create thousands of jobs in Ohio. Finally, Steve Mullan and Mary Landry of Maryland Brush Company explained how their 100% employee-owned, unionized company in inner city Baltimore has moved from old to new economy products.
Each of the presentations was followed by a spirited Q&A session. The presentations were followed by a tasty lunch provided by Golden Spice Catering, and then the attendees broke up into groups to discuss how the examples presented by the speakers applied to the city of Detroit.
